Ṣaḍ-Balam

Ṣaḍ-Bala · the six-fold strength of each graha

BPHS Ch. 27 · Sthāna · Dik · Kāla · Ceṣṭā · Naisargika · Dṛk · unit: rūpa
P56ग्रह-बल-गणनाgraha-bala-gaṇanā

Period determination: each ṣaḍ-bala component is bounded by its own residue range on R — sthāna ∈ [0..60], dik ∈ [0..60], etc. Sum is in (0, 360].

Sub-components: Uccha (exaltation distance), Saptavarga (7-varga dignity), Ojayugma-Rāśy-Aṃśa (odd/even sign + navāṃśa), Kendra (1/4/7/10), Drekkāṇa (1st/2nd/3rd decanate). Composite measures classical dignity.

Dik-Bala
Directional

Each graha is strongest in its own cardinal direction. Sūrya/Maṅgala → 10th (S/heaven); Candra/Śukra → 4th (N/earth); Guru/Budha → 1st (E); Śani → 7th (W). Computed by angular distance from the graha's required-house.

Temporal

Sub-components: Natonnata (day/night strength), Pakṣa (waxing/waning), Tribhāga (day-third), Abda/Māsa/Vāra/Horā (year/month/weekday/hour-lordship), Ayana (Sun's northing/southing), Yuddha (planetary war).

चेष्टा-बलम्
Ceṣṭā-Bala
Motional

Retrograde planets gain strength (peak ceṣṭā). Direct motion at average speed = mid-strength; combustion under Sun reduces ceṣṭā. Particularly load-bearing for tāra-grahas.

Natural (fixed)

Fixed weight per graha by classical hierarchy: Sūrya 60 → Candra 51.43 → Śukra 42.85 → Guru 34.28 → Budha 25.71 → Maṅgala 17.14 → Śani/Rāhu/Ketu 8.57.

Aspectual

Net of incoming aspects — benefic aspects add, malefic aspects subtract. Computed via Jagannātha-Paddhati's pratibala formulas across all 12 houses.

The minimum required values (BPHS 27.65) are: Sūrya 390 · Candra 360 · Maṅgala 300 · Budha 420 · Guru 390 · Śukra 330 · Śani 300 rūpaka. A graha falling below its minimum is considered structurally weak and remedial work is advised. Rāhu and Ketu are conventionally not assigned ṣaḍ-bala minimums.

The /chart caster computes graha-positions, retrograde-status, and dignities — the inputs to ṣaḍ-bala. Composite strengths reveal which grahas are structurally empowered to deliver their daśā promises.

KAAL Truth #5: The ṣaḍ-bala aggregates structural strength. Predictive synthesis — when does the empowered graha deliver — belongs to the learned Jyotiṣī integrating with daśā, gocara, and the chart-owner's lived context.
